Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the US that commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas learned they were free — over two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This celebration of independence has long been observed with community gatherings, parades, festivals, and more, and this year we recommend honoring the holiday by reading a new book or two by a Black author. We’ve gathered the latest exciting reads from outstanding Black voices, and we’re sure you’ll find something here to love.
