We are a rapidly growing startup launched by serial entrepreneurs and run by a team gathered from the publishing and tech industries. Millions of readers use our products every day to find great books, and our services empower thousands of leading publishers and authors to drive sales and find new fans. Our engineering philosophy

We organize into small cross-functional teams that are deeply focused on one product or initiative. These teams are empowered to make product and technology decisions and quickly build the best solutions for our readers, publishers and authors. Our typical teams consist of four to five engineers, a product manager, and a designer. We lean heavily on automation, good test coverage, and continuous deployment to ensure we’re constantly getting rapid feedback from our users, and follow the approach of starting small, shipping often, and deferring unnecessary complexity. Our teams are strongest when we aren’t over-specialized or operating in separate silos, so we encourage our engineers to rotate teams about once per year.

We believe that we build better products when our teammates have a variety of perspectives and experiences. We care a lot about creating a supportive and inclusive environment and it’s important that everybody who joins BookBub cares about this, too. We value collaboration and teamwork – everyone is paired with an onboarding buddy when they join to help them get ramped up, and we encourage continuous mentorship and knowledge sharing across the organization through programs like our biweekly lunch and learns. Although we encourage pair programming and other forms of collaboration, we also want to make sure our engineers have time to go “heads down” and spend longer periods of time in a flow state. With that in mind, we’ve designated Tuesdays as “Heads Down Day,” and try to avoid regularly scheduled meetings on that day.

In your first six months, you’ll likely:

  • Work closely with other engineers and across teams like product, analytics, and design to develop ideas and execute on projects
  • Spend about half of your time writing code and contributing new features to be used by our millions of users
  • Learn or deepen your understanding of our tech stack, including React, Ruby on Rails, Clojure, and AWS
  • Lead a team of three to five engineers, keeping them engaged and helping unblock them when questions or issues arise
  • Collaborate with product, design, analytics, and other stakeholders to keep a good slate of work ready for the team
  • Identify and prioritize tech debt for the team
  • Some of our leads manage people, and some don't — it's great if you're interested in this, but not at all an issue if you're not 

We’re looking for engineers who:

  • Are smart, friendly, collaborative, and intellectually curious
  • Love to learn and teach, to be both mentors and mentees
  • Have experience leading a team formally or informally
  • Possess good judgment on making technical tradeoffs, with a bias towards simple and pragmatic solutions
  • Are sensitive to the needs and perspectives of others and care about creating a positive and inclusive environment
  • Enjoy moving products forward quickly, but want to work at a sustainable pace — we're building a business with long-term value
  • Have in-depth experience building modern web/mobile/internet products
  • We have a number of teams working in different areas, so we're open to people who skew towards the frontend, towards the backend, work full stack, or have another area of specialization
  • Most of our tech leads have 5+ years of experience building software with a team, but we care much more about aptitude and attitude than how long you've been doing the work


We offer competitive benefit options including medical, dental, vision, 401k, generous paid parental leave, and take-what-you-need paid time off. We encourage everyone to take at least four weeks a year off, in addition to our thirteen company holidays. Rest and rejuvenation is a key part of sustainable work, and we want all of our employees to find a balance that works for them.

$140,000–$240,000 is the anticipated salary range for this role. Ultimately, the offer will be aligned with skills and experience, and will be adjusted within or around this range based on the candidate who joins the team.

Remote work flexibility

Please note: for this role, we are considering remote candidates who are located in the following states: MA, NY, RI, ME, PA, MD, and IL. Other locations to be reviewed upon request. 

Our team has choose-where-you-work flexibility that allows you to choose a predominantly remote, hybrid, or in-office setup at our Cambridge, Massachusetts office. We’ll help each team member figure out the work set up that’s best for them, including WFH equipment or a dedicated desk space in our office. We value the health and safety of our people above all else, and our in-person work options will remain contingent on local safety guidelines and recommendations.

Most of our teams currently operate with a hybrid model, with some people working full- or part-time from the office, and some from home. We value and prioritize collaboration across mediums and spaces, and we invest in ensuring that meetings and other forms of collaboration are set up with equal access regardless of where you work.
